"The Self-Unseeing" by THOMAS HARDY (with stanza re-ordering collage) Here is the ancient floor, Footworn and hollowed and thin, Here was the former door Where the dead feet walked in. She sat here in her chair, Smiling into the fire; He who played stood there, Bowing it higher and higher. Childlike, I danced in a dream; Blessings emblazoned that day; Everything glowed with a gleam; Yet we were looking away!

COUNT OMINOUS Am I the villain? Seeking only glory Black bile that drives the plot Allow me to be the hero in my own story. Even though I’m not So you quest for The dark elixir What makes a villain rot... Apothecary, Fairy curses A toxic potion for blood lust Quaff the brew, It burns your eyes, Release the villain from inside Drink your allegiance to apathy! Now the nemesis In your story The one that foils the plot Apothecary, Gremlin curses A poison wrecking trust Allow me to be the hero in my own story. Now I’ll drive the plot I hear the war drum of your heart

GOBLIN BALLROOM You’ve bitten the peach You’re trippin into a ballroom Glowing gowns in the dark Shrouds and masks Specters dance Goblins and skeletons Waltzing to xylophones Wizards are making out How far does the magic roam Wraiths watch us from the walls Hades floor beneath us crawls Stay asleep a chance to meet Death for the last dance a sense 'twere better / To fail (He calls) a sense 'twere better / To fail (Specters dance) a sense 'twere better / To fail Dreams are true while they last, and do we not live in dreams? Stay asleep entranced to meet Death demands This dance of body and limb This weight of body and limb. This dance of body and limb Dark is the world to thee; thyself art the reason why, For is He not all but thou, that hast power to feel "I am I"? You’ve bitten the peach ("I am I"?) You’re trippin into a ballroom ("I am I"?) Glowing gowns in the dark (PEACH…) Shrouds and masks Specters dance Glory about thee, and thou fulfillest thy doom, Making Him broken gleams A splendor and gloom. . . (a sense 'twere better / To fail) fulfillest thy doom, (a sense 'twere better / To fail) (a sense 'twere better / To fail)

about

A note from jojo:
I suggested the idea of a dark, high fantasy, magical-realist 1980s film soundtrack for an as of yet untold tale. This was just to begin filling the "imagination cauldron" as we set out to find/receive this record.

I had some combination of Labyrinth, Legend, Willow, The Princess Bride, and Blade Runner both musically and narratively in mind.

Each song told us who they were and what they had to express. In some tunes we used seed lyrics from brilliant poet-writers Thomas Hardy, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, and Alex Michaelides. (Otherwise they are original lyrics.) We used quoted poetry in collage/cento form, and sometimes with some re-ordering. Each song description includes more of our poetic footnotes and runes.

I hope you enjoy "Potions of Pre-villainy" on one's inner film projector. We were inspired in part by the aforementioned films (and soundtracks), fairy tales, Arthurian legend, and Shakespearean protagonist arcs - among other dreams.

And in conversation with all this linear talk of narrative - these songs mirror the infinite kaleidoscope of the inner journey. A few tracks can be read as psychedelic or meditation experiences, ritual or nature medicine, mystical encounters, and other altered states of consciousness.

Thanks for reading and listening!
In haunting and affection,
-jojo
